6 Ridiculous Animal Attacks

by Ian Fortey

There are plenty of awful things that can attack you n this world; dogs, tigers, killer bees, sharks, hobos and, of course, the dreaded bear. This past week marked the first time a bear had mauled someone in Yellowstone Park since 1986. The bear was protecting its cubs and the unfortunate hiker paid the price. But this news is grim and depressing in a world where most of our news is grim and depressing. So instead of focusing on all the terrible beasts that can destroy you, let’s focus on animal attacks that make you feel bad for the victim, not because of the damage done, but because it’s kind of lame that the attack happened at all.

Blood River

Chinese residents who were passing by the river Jana (Jian River) were a bit shocked in Disember 2011 – instead of the usual crystal clear water, the river flow was something very much like the blood. It turned out that illegal dumping of red paint from a nearby chemical plant was the cause of the change in colour. The matter was brought to the attention of the authorities and is under investigation.

Prototype GHOST military watercraft claims a world's first

If you combined a stealth jet fighter and an attack helicopter and stuck them in the water, what would you get? Well, according to the folks at New Hampshire's Juliet Marine Systems (JMS), you'd get the GHOST marine platform. Privately developed for possible use by the U.S. Navy, the boat would reportedly be invisible to enemy ships' radar, while also being faster and more economical than existing military vessels. The company's big claim, however, is that GHOST is the world's first super-cavitating watercraft.

50 Things That Changed Our Lives In A Decade

Was it only a decade ago that a blackberry was a mere warm season fruit? That green was, well, a color, and reality TV was that one show sandwiched between music videos on MTV? Ivanhoe Reservoir Covered With 400,000 Black Plastic Balls

In 2007, the Department of Water Protection in Los Angeles detected high levels of bromate, a carcinogen that forms when bromide and chlorine react with sunlight, in Los Angeles’s Ivanhoe Reservoir. Bromide is naturally present in groundwater and chlorine is used to kill bacteria, but sunlight is the final ingredient in the potentially harmful mix. The 102-year-old facility serves about 600,000 customers downtown and in South Los Angeles. When the Department of Water Protection realized the problem, they began construction of a new underground reservoir in Griffith Park, but while the new facility was being built they had to determine a way to keep the sunlight out of the water.

Long Exposure Photography

Long-exposure photography or time-exposure photography involves using a long-duration shutter speed to sharply capture the stationary elements of images while blurring, smearing, or obscuring the moving elements.

When a scene includes both stationary and moving subjects (for example, a fixed street and moving cars or a camera within a car showing a fixed dashboard and moving scenery), a slow shutter speed can cause interesting effects, such as light trails.

Monsters Of Canada

Even though many people tend to write off Canada as being either a vast and empty ice covered wasteland or simply a place with well mannered and nice natives, the nation itself has a very rich and long wearing traditions of legends and monsters. Some of the creatures come from the stories and myths from the Native Americans who still live in the country as part of the ethnic group known as the First Nations. However, some were brought over from the stories of European settlers and immigrants. This situation creates a very unique occurrence where an entire country is full of monsters that are from an extended mix of origins but still embraced by a modern population.

Top 10 Exclusive Foods

By Natalie Jaro

Of the top ten exclusive and most sought after foods a few come to mind while others come as a bit of a surprise. Often these foods are quite expensive due to the rarity of the product, astronomically expensive in some cases, appearing only at the tables of the rich and famous. Of those tasty morsels that are the most prized, some are meats, spices, fungi, fish eggs, melons, chocolate, saliva, yes, you heard me right, saliva, and even precious metals.

10. Saffron
To start off, what is life without spice? The highest ranking of spices is the elusive Indian spice Saffron. Although Saffron is not hard to grow and is harvested worldwide, it is derived from the saffron flower which requires painstaking care to collect. The labor and resources needed to harvest just 1 pound of saffron takes 50,000 to 75,000 flowers to make. The sum total of an entire football field of these small flowers. The spice costs between $500 per pound to $5,000. With that price tag, the crocus saffron stamens pack the sweetest nectar and the biggest buck blooming in at number 10.

Buy clothes that fit well.
